It has been SUCH a hot summer in California this year! We broke the official recorded record up where we are at in June (and July and August are usually hotter than June) and even all the Redwoods trees up around here in NorCal look so sad and crisp! Good idea to dehyrate the onions outside! I do it inside and it is quite fragrant!

Hi Brian - I’m in Sacramento, and we’ve had some pretty severe heat the last few years. I started out using bedsheets, which was unlovely, but it did the job. It didn’t have enough airflow, though. So, I bought some shade cloth scraps to try, and I liked them well enough that I promptly bought fully finished shade cloth. Long story short, what I’ve got out there now are wires strung between t-posts, on which to attach shade cloth using carabiners. This does several things: -It keeps the cloth from interfering with the plants. -It keeps the cloth in place during high winds. -It allows me to easily slide the cloth out of the way when I don’t need it. -It protects my plants from hail during the occasional freak storm. -It means I don’t have to hang it up and take it down multiple times during the season. Shade cloth requires special care. You can’t throw it in the washer and you can’t just put it away dirty if you want it to last a long while, so it’s been a labor saver using the wires. (I hose off the cloths and air dry them before storing.) I should mention that I’ve tried an array of different percentages and found that 30% works fine for most applications. The exceptions are strawberries and my salad zone, which seem to do best with 50%. I do have one 80% cloth which was wonderful for humans, but not for any of my plants. My final piece of advice is not to cheap out when you buy shade cloth. Get stuff that’s made to last, and that has grommets. You won’t regret it. Hope this is helpful. It’s great to see Daisy back.!

Living in South Australia Brian our temperature in Summer can reach 48c at peaks so constant covering with shadecloth is essential and 30% is ok to cover at peak season. It doesn't affect plant output I have found. Saves having scalded fruit. Cheers mate!

I saw a video of a guy who put a 20x20' shade cloth over his patio and immediately figured I'd do the same over my garden. It required a center pole though, I am waiting for my hardware cloth and some landscape cloth before starting the new beds. I'll let you know if I'm able to make it work - up here North of Joshua Tree NP, the winds can be killer.

I personally have to 30 /60 foot shade clothes. They have saved my plants for the last five years. I have to purchase new ones when the weather take one or both of them out. Early this tornado season we had straight line winds that took one of mine out. Hope this helps. Great video, thanks for sharing.

Hi Brian, I will be looking into shade cloth for next year for my poly tunnel. If we reach 75 / 80 F here in Ireland its not just the veg start to suffer leaf curl. Twenty years ago holidays in Thailand for me were no problem in regards to the temperature; up in the 100's F is common. Now I'm older 65/70 F has me prostrate. I tried your over head climbing string method for my tomatoes and most are over 6 feet in height. Lots of fruit too just turning in colour now. I had one of the support lines break over night and down came one of the tomato plants. Thankfully no damage and the peppers survived. Better cord needed next year. Your smoker clip just reminded me to head to the freezer and get a couple of Beef Cheeks to defrost for dinner tomorrow. Try them if you haven't had them before. Slow cook for 3-4 hours, you can spread that meat like butter; so tender.

We built a shade cloth structure that's 1000 square feet over our whole veggie garden. We used conduit pipe and tent connectors. It's about 8 ft tall, with 2 ft buried and cemented in the ground. We put shade cloth up using cheap metal shower curtain clips in June when temps reach the high 90s and leave it up through early to mid-October when temps get below the high 90s. We live in the Inland Empire and it's usually at or above 100 degrees most of the summer. I've tried 30%, 40%, and 50% shade cloth. 50% was too much shade and reduced fruit production. 40% was better but still reduced fruit production for some types of plants. 30% is perfect, and is what we've settled on. I think you can use a much higher shade percentage if you're just putting up shade cloth during heat waves. If you leave it up all summer, though, you have to take into consideration that reduced light affects fruit production. You can see our shade structure in some of the videos on my channel.

Please be careful giving raw potatoes to your animals. I had a dog dig up and eat some potatoes a few years ago and she died from it. After doing some research I found out that raw potatoes can be toxic to some animals. It's the solanine and oxalates that are toxic.

Glad to see Daisy back and everything in your garden looking so good. Last year during our two or three heatwaves, I put up shade cloth over a 4.5 x 12 foot bed. I kept up with my watering and everything did quite well. This year I didn't put it in there because I have corn and it seems to love the heat and the strong sunlight. However, I should have used it on a couple of tomato plants I have in containers. I thought I was safe because it was underneath a tree, but as with your peppers, enough sunlight got through to burn up one plant and cause damage and flower drop in the other. Lesson learned!

Yes, I am in Sanger California, and I put up shade cloth last year and never took it down. I have 3 carport structures I attached the shade cloth to. I ended up being able to over winter 6 tomatoes, 8 peppers, and 3 eggplant. I added more shaded areas this year. Working on one more right now. Next time put that corn on your pit boss. I do that on my traeger and it is great! Better than boiled, IMO.

I even put up shade cloth here in Montana. We always have some upper 90° or low 100° temps in summer plus I think hire elevation scorches plants easier. Anyway you can build a nice frame with a way to pull the cloth over when needed. I don’t have a homestead but I hope to eventually grow the majority of my vegetables and fruit. And preserve for winter. Last winter a head of cauliflower at our local grocery was almost $14. Inches can’t afford fresh vegetables or fruit at the grocery store.
